Hi KTU,
You can use 1 gal white vinegar, 1 cup salt and about 1 TBSP of Dawn to make a fairly potent weedkiller. However, you should know that buckthorn has a high tolerance for salt. I'd try doubling the salt however, most of the recommendations are to use a chemical. :( Wishing you the best.
Hi KTU: I'd use Epsom salts and not table salt:) The recipe I use is:
1 gallon of white vinegar
2 cups of Epsom salts
1/4 cup of dish washing detergent, like Dawn.
Mix the vinegar and salt until the salt is completely dissolved.
Mix in the Dawn until mixed well, but not all fuzzy and sudsy, sort of swirl it around.
Put in a spray bottle and spray the weeds liberally, in the morning after the dew has gone, spray the weeds at the sunniest time of day.. Then, by evening the weeds should be dead or on their way out. Don't spray anything you want to keep or it will die too. I have used this and it works. Also, it's good for making an edging as it kills only what it touches. If you have something like a piece of cardboard, hold it up and down, edgewise, and spray the area you want as an edge. Just be careful not to spray your flowers and/or bushes. Good luck
If you're not opposed to chemicals, you can get a product called Ground Clear. Most home improvement centres carry it. Then, get a small can or jar and pour some Ground Clear in it and get a small foam brush and brush the leaves, top and bottom Be sure you don't let it drip on anything you like as this stuff kills everything. If you know someone, or are, diabetic, get one of their used syringes and fill it with the Ground Clear. Then, inject the Ground Clear into the stem of the plant. Both of these will take the Ground Clear to the roots and kill the plant completely. This works really good on Poison Ivy and other invasive plants. Just be careful not to get it on what you want to keep. Good luck
