It is most likely slugs. Apply crushed eggs shells,put a plate of beer,use copper banding,apply food grade diatomaceous earth and spray them down with horticultural oil.
Rabbits and deer nibble on my hostas ...this year I've grated Irish Spring soap and sprinkled it on the leaves and and on the ground around them . I guess they don't like the smell or the taste. So far, it's worked ,
