What can I do to get rid of ants in my backyard?

We have an excessive amount of ants in our backyard and have tried sprays, and powder stuff to get rid of them with no success. Can you give me any advice on what we can use?

No the whole area. Put it in a spreader just like fertilizer. -

Ant buster nematodes work well, but they take a couple of weeks to kick in. -
