I love my cats, and I love my huge indoor plants, but I need to keep the two apart. The cats have perfectly good litter boxes meant for that purpose....

I have had this problem with my cats also. I use pine cones or rocks. Depending on how much they love to flip things around the pine cones might be too light.

Soak a cotton ball in peppermint oil and put one in each pot. Cats hate the smell.

Plant a Mary Gold (just one in a pot, the rotate one of your plants, then another mary gold, .. the cats hate this, and so do other animals. Keep this up, and save the seeds from the Mary Gold, for this can be the seeds for next yr. Enjoy, they do alot of good!! J.

Depending on your cats you might have to try different things (many of the follwong suggestions worked on most of my cats, but unfortunately not always all of them...)

Many cats are very sensitive to certain scents, so spraying or sprinkling the plants and/or soil around them with cayenne pepper or hot sauce, citrus (you can also spread dried peels around) or Bitter Apple, Bitter Orange can deter them from going in there.

Should none of that help, you could span a net over the soil/the pot (with an opening for the plant, of course - you might have to use two pieces that you connect around the plant, if it is too big).

Try planting toothpicks or nails or some strips of bared wire or even chicken wire (they hate to step on it), you can even paint it to blend in and/or cover a bit with some moss or decorative mulch. They will get the message right away.

nyplantsplanI would mix some cayenne pepper in the soil in the house plants... They will learn to avoid them. You can mix the powder in water, and spray it outside, too, but it disapates quicker.

Also, make sure the litter boxes are always tended. Because they will avoid dirty ones. Maybe add 1 or two more, if you have room...
