Smashed egg shells and coffee grounds sprinkled around the plants. Commercial slug bait works well too .

Get some cheap beer, pour it into a small lid or saucer after dark. The slugs will be attracted to the yeast and the next morning you will find drunken dead slugs-- check out "you bet your garden" by Mike McGrath. Great gardening tips.
