unfortunately, by removing their water and food sources, which would mean eliminating the pond entirely, and reducing plantings near the house.
keeping them out of the house involves making sure there are no holes in your foundation or the edges of your house for them to enter.
since they're one of nature's best rodent repellents, it's never occurred to me to keep them away, but I don't know of anything (including commercial granules, mothballs, and the like) that would keep them away from a promising landscape.
We used to put lime around the perimeter of our yard to prevent snakes from coming in.
There are several flowering plants that will discourage them, including marigolds.
Wormwood, vinegar and ammonia apparently repel them as well. There are several sites with recommendations on line. I’d do some Google for my area, to learn what types of snakes were discussing. I’m sure there are local blogs about the problem too.
