I have tried mothballs, hot peppers to no avail. They seem to like the peppers I had used to keep them out of birdseed. My best deterrent so far is cats, I have 4 and they like to lounge on the deck all day.

Put chicken wire down in fall-in spring the plants will grow thru

I have tried the chicken wire also & they are not able to get thru as easily. I also put a layer of hay over the chicken wire to disguise it & keep the Squirrels from moving the wire. Good luck.

Make that straw instead of hay. sorry.

We have used chicken wire also-just bury it in the dirt after planting bulbs-flowers grow thru but squirrels won't dig them up !

I have done the following for years and it is guaranteed to keep chipmunks, squirrels, etc, from digging in your pots or flower beds: 1. Get as much human hair as you can from your hair dresser or barber (a couple of extra bucks is usually appreciated by whomever sweeps the floor for them). Hair color, length, texture doesn't matter, although short hair is easier to handle - it may take a couple of visits to collect enough hair depending on the area to be treated; 2. Scatter hair very thinly around plants and cover with light layer of top soil or potting soil to keep it from blowing or washing away. Using hair is environmentally friendly and pesky animals will give it wide berth - it may need to be replaced periodically. If you cut your own hair you are ahead of the game!!!

Try moth balls, they don't like the smell.

I've put mothballs in my shed hoping to keep squirrels out but it doesn't work.
