I put mothballs down the holes wherethe lil critters come and go. They don't like the smell apparently it won't harm them, so they will just move somewhere else.
I feed them away from areas that they would cause problems. They also eat the fallen seed from my bird feeders. I love watching them myself. As far as I can tell, they are not causing problems, maybe because I do feed them. I do have many pin wheels throughout my veggie garden already to try to scare away the rabbits and squirrels.
