What is causing holes in my yard not like mole mounds?

Take a step on the grass do not see a hole but feel the ground sinking in and overtime gets deeper more visible. Usually 4 to 6 holes within the area of 4 ft width and 6ft length. Once holes deeper the grass goes they look more like a tunnel then straight down holes. I do have possums who come in my yard at night.

moles are very active this year.
I don't think possums burrow in tunnels. Maybe moles, voles, shrews, chipmunks, groundhogs? here is a list to help you figure o culprit is based on the burrowing they do: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/wildlife/whats-digging-holes/
