Spray vinegar on the grass. It'll take some time for it to die, but once it does you can rake it up. Backbreaking work in some cases, but cheap and effective.

I think bleach undiluted would kill anything though not environmentally friendly it works
Roundup fitting the growing season
opinion The answer depends on your opinion of using chemicals, a glyphosate herbicide like round up will do it. Or you can make a herbicide by mixing 2 cups of salt per gallon of white vinegar.
I agree with April E, use vinegar and salt until it's gone. You will have to sweeten the soil later if you intend to plant there. You can amend it with lime later to sweeten it, keep in mind weeds grow heavier in acidic soils.
smother it out with black plastic.....hence no chemicals
Grass frows deeper than you thing. I dug mine out wit a trench shovel, but my son finished it with a rototiller.
I would never use Roundup. If you are determined to use a spray then there are other grass killers that are not as harmful. One is Spectracide grass killer that only kills grass not weeds or flowers. But covering the area the black plastic, cardboard or layers of newspaper is the safe preferable way and will work if you have time to wait.
Low tech: right after it rains, start pulling! The rain loosens the soil so you get the root out too.
