My neighbor told me to dig them up in March, I hope this helps. May sure you get the onions or they will come back.
To get rid of them completely, you need to pull them by hand. Use a small shovel and try to get all of the roots. Any roots left behind will grow again next year. Good luck with this project.
I have a million. There is no way I can get all of them dug up every year. Like you said, if you don't get the onions on the bottom of the stem, we are wasting our time. I have dug and dug, look back out they are back the next day. There is always something to worry the day lights out of you, as mama would say!!!
