We had to put 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth around the bottom of our sheds and chicken coop to keep cats and other critters from calling it home. We dug a six-inch-deep trench all the way around and then put the wire into the trench and backfilled it. We attached the top end of the wire to the coop/shed with either staples or sheet metal screws and washers.
I agree with Cindy; our pier foundation house was open when we bought it and the neighborhood cats were using the sand as a toilet! I had Babes put up plastic lattice around- pretty and keeps them out.
Unless you want to become a cat rancher, call your local humane society to pick up the cats, or look for an organization that spays/neuter them for free, notches the ear, and releases them back to the same area.
