smother them. you can use use cardboard, wood chips, old carpet, there are black plastic mulch films.

i'v gone to strip gardens- the 4 ft wide plastic, lay it out, cut it to length, and make an x with a scissor or knife where you want to plant, then make the planting hole deep enough and plant. then i put mulch at the plants base....i used wood chips.

my current place has to many tree roots to dig a hole, but i still lay out the mulch film and leave a mowers width between the strips. my containers go on top of the film, no weeds.

Mix 1 gallon of white vinegar with 1 cup of table salt and 1 tablespoon of liquid dish detergent. Put the mixture into a plastic spray bottle and spray directly on targetedweeds. The oil in soap naturally breaks down the surface of waxy or hairy weedleaves.

I’ve used just plan vinegar in spray bottle with narrow stream aim for the weed. A little liquid soap helps it cling to weed but I’ve had success without.
