I use non-toxic stuff in the house, I use either EcoSmart or Victor's that are all natural non-toxic.... they are very minty smelling. You spray it directly on them if you see them, but you can also use it on a paper towel and wipe on areas like around the doorways, counters to repel them.   Expecially for termites you need the pros. They do have organic pet safe options. I have had it done before. My mom's house had a termite problem and I had it taken care of. I strongly recommend a professional inspection as they inspect attics, crawl spaces and know how to test in places we normally do not even think about.

  Bugs are a part of life and can't be avoided completely, but can be controlled. Think about a monthly service to get them under control and then periodically thereafter.
  
  I get an annual inspection and and treat when necessary. I also spray the perimeter of my property and base of my house once a month with plain white 5% acidity vinegar. It does help.
  
  I do keep a bit of wood at the house but not much (I am lucky, my woodpile is stored at another location), and I load up during daylight hours where I can inspect for black widows, termites and any other creepy crawlies.
  
  I truly understand your concern, as I have a bunch of pets myself, 3 dogs, 6 cats, a canary and a dragon, plus the next door neighbors 3 dogs plus any visiting pets. My house is very low tech and every single decision is started with "how do I clean this" and "is it safe for the pets."
