What products can I use to eliminate grass under my trees?

Some of the trees are young, if that makes a difference. I would prefer a non-herbicide, if possible.

You cannot you a herbicide as that will kill you trees. Smother the grass out with newspaper,cardboard.landscape fabric and top with mulch.
Laying black plastic garbage bags over it will kill the grass.

Thank you all! I bought expensive tree circles made of recycled material that grass grew through. Will use these suggestions!
