What’s the best, safest way to get rid of ants?

I have dogs and cats in my yard and need a way to safely get rid of the zillions of ants (usually just black ones) in my yard and patio.

Hi Keli I've heard many times that corn meal works well for ants, they can't digest it so it kills them but doesn't hurt the surrounding environment.

Diatomaceous earth available online and in some stores, like TSC.

I’ve never heard of this, but I’ll sure look in Home Depot for this. Thanks so much! Keli

DE works well. "There are ants liquid "traps" that the ants will go to and take back home..this will kill off the colony in a few days, but you have to leave these alone for them to work.

I tried some cheapie traps and they didn’t work, but I’ll look for these in Home Depot when I’m there. Thank you! Keli

Cotton balls saturated with sugar and Borax dissolved in a very small amount of water, and placed in pathways has always worked for me. I have eliminated two apparently different colonies for going on the second year with this method.

I actually have all this stuff and will give it a shot tomorrow. Going to Home Depot to look for some other stuff, too, but hope this works and saves me the trip! Thanks for your help! Keli

We wipe down the counters with pure lemon juice. Then sprinkle around Jiffy cornbread mix. It is sweet and attracts them. You have to be patient but in a few days you should actually see dead ants lying around the piles, if not slowly staggering around until they fade out. Reappy as needed, may take a little time but we finally got rid of them. Then we just keep a bottle of lemon juice on the counter to keep wiping down. Works for us every time!
