How do I choose shrubs and plants that are deer proof?

Nothing is deemed "Deer Proof". Deer tend to avoid lavender, sage, rosemary, iris, garlic, castor bean plant, dahlias, daffodils, ageratum (the bulbs contain arsenic).

You can check various garden websites such as Old Farmer's Almanac, Rodale institute, Rutgers University, etc. They will have lists for "most preferred" (roses, tulips, hydrangeas, nine bark shrubs, hollies, day lilies, etc.), "somewhat preferred", and "least preferred".

Depending upon your location, you may have better or worse luck with particular plantings. To be safe, try a deer repellent (concentrated liquid spray ), with rotten eggs and garlic, used at least weekly to begin, and monthly after the first several months. A dose of chili pepper or similar can't hurt, either, in keeping deer from repeated browsing and total destruction of your landscaping.

Hi Carolyn. Most nurseries will have on the tag that they are deer or rabbit proof. I would ask for suggestions at your local nursery.
