How do I kill weeds but not the bushes?

I have a row of young oleander bushes against my 100 foot long back yard fence. I am continually having to hand weed under and around these bushes. Once the bushes grow large the weeds won't be a problem because they'll be hidden. What can I spray on the weeds that won't hurt or kill the oleander bushes?thanks.......

    I hate to say, only hand weeding is safe.

    Andi You need to soak the ground where the weeds are. Then the next day, pull the weeds out by their roots. Put your hand close to the ground, and pull slowly. Aloha!

  • My dad taught me many years ago to have a couple of 5 gallon buckets you can place upside down over the bushes. Then spray round up type weed killer on the grass/weeds, taking care to not get it on the bushes. Move the buckets as you go along. Once the weeds are dead, I'l spread Preen to prevent new weeds from sprouting there. Also bark mulch will be beneficial to the shrubs and help prevent weeds.

      Thanks for this information. I'm in California, so when it warms up, I'll try this. I appreciate you input.

     Take extra care when handling this plant.

    *native leaves and or native organic mulch ( Dye free)

    *pruning it so it fans outward

    * food scraps

    *vinegar- 2%

    *Landscape tarp fabric ( you can find this anywhere)

    *plant closer together, so weeds can't even.

    *hand pick them

     DO NOT

    mow the lawn with weeds

    use cardboards or papers unless organic & native

    use stone, unless native

    dish soap

      Your advice regarding using weed reducing fabric was one I'd thought of. But first I need to get rid of the weeds again. Once the weeds are gone this time, I'll put down the tarp fabric and be done with this project. The oleanders will continue to grow and will fill in and block out any weeds. Thanks for all the other additional information. :-)
