Kathy, if you have a lot of new construction near you, this will disturb the ants home and cause them to roam. Or some dirt of ground disturbance. To get them under control you may need to get a pest company to come and spray. We had this issue with our new home, so had them come and spray quarterly. -

sugar plus borax equal parts- put it out where you see ant trails the sugar atracks, the borax kills. -

Are they large red ants? FIre ants that leave a welt when the bite?In order to get rid of ants completely, you need to destroy the nest. I use food grade Diatomaceous Earth. I am not sure where you are seeing them.
