Why do I have moss growing on my front lawn?

wherever there is a lot of shade there is this moss looking stuff growing, how do I get rid of it and change it to grass?

Apply pelletized Lime and Moss out by Scotts.
Lime get a spreader and put a bag or two out. Keep pets off until it rains or water it with a sprinkler if it's an option. Once dry pets can resume. Posts say dogs are ok on lime however best to be safe. Definately keep your cat at bay Until absorbed and dry.
