You will need to extend your existing roof. There are so many questions to take into consideration before you can start planning. Can you add a photo in the post or comments?

Do you want to make it the length of the entire house or partial?

Do you want it to be a wooden base, concrete, composite?

The height of your house will play into the design plan.

Is your house rectangular or is a portion of it offset?

Here's an article to get you started on determining exactly what you want. Also, I drove around and took photos of houses I liked when we did ours.

We would like a gable style to go over front door to side where garage is. We do not know about water flowing off roof where gable meets roof on side. It is 8 ft out from house and porch is 24 ft long

Dana Hi, The first thing you'll need is a permit, because your adding on a structure to an already built house. You can't do this yourself, call a carpenter. If you don't do things up to code you'll be turned down for a certificate of occupancy. You can find a reputable carpenter on HomeAdvisor or Angie's list. Aloha!
