I want to change my picture window to two big windows because I like how it changes the inside of my home but I don’t like the planners of the outside. How could I make this look better on the outside. I took a picture of a house that did this but it is blah. They have the two windows that I like but like I said it is blah

if you look at this house.on the left side where there is two single windows that is where normally on these type of homes there is a picture/bay window . I want to do two single windows but make it look better than this being so plain. I attached a picture of my house.

I love the inside of the house with two windows . Please someone help with this idea

    Hi Carolyne,

    Where is the picture window?

A picture window is a very large window with one pane of glass. You don't have any on your house. Go to a window company and look at their brochures to see what you like. There is no obligation to look.

    Carolyne,

I think one of the problems with your house is that it needs some color besides white with dark shutters and brick color. You might want to consider a softer off white or ivory color...one without a yellow or bluish tint, and then whitewash your brick for an "old world" look. Change the color of your shutters to something like a "light navy" color...what some folks call "summer navy."

What would also help the curb appeal is to add a beautiful entry porch. There are so many variations you could choose. Start over the door with an arched cover, then come out over where the steps are and make it wider...tying it into the house. You could actually widen it all the way to the two bottom windows Then add posts and a set of wide steps. This would be a great place to set a couple of rocking chairs and flowers pots.

The style could be whatever your preference is for decor. Square rustic posts or traditional colonial ones. This would drastically change the look and presence of your house.

I love the effect you get inside with the 2 large windows...it gives you better wall space which you have set up very nicely.

Here is a house much like yours that has an added porch. But the style makes this stunning!!!

I have remodeled many, many houses. May I point out a few things for you to think about. The picture with two windows has a few differences from your house-which is the second house if I read your post correctly--1. These windows are much taller and lower to the floor than your current picture window is. 2. They are much farther apart than your picture window area will allow. If you install two windows, they are going to be much closer together unless you cut a larger opening than your current picture window size. This will mean a lot of framing and filling in between the windows. You will then have to put up matching siding/shingles in the area between your new windows. You will then have to paint the entire siding/shingles because you will never get the new paint to match the old. This is quite an expense.

If you just use the current picture window size, you will end up with the same look that the first house has which you have already said looks blah. Even if you go with the smaller size windows, you will still have to fill in with new siding and repaint. I think your best bet would be to leave the window as is, or go with a larger picture window that extends further to the floor so that you will not have to fill in with new siding. Just some things for you to think about. I live in a house that is almost identical to yours.

We had a picture window just like yours with the 2 side windows. We replaced the entire window with a bow window in the same opening. It has 4 windows in it with 2 that are stationary and 2 outside ones are casement that can crank open. We like the looks because it makes the room look larger with the large bow.

My house is the same style, and I wanted to soften the square, "boxy" look. The addition of window boxes helped.

I would level out the front yard, too hilly. Take down those ugly trees and plant smaller colorful pretty trees that bloom. Paint the house, too drab looking.

Depends on your budget. Least expensive is to paint your front door a pretty color taken from a color in your bricks---purple-blues perhaps. Cut down the front trees on the left. Their roots are bulging from the soil and look precarious . Garden beds in front of house could be curved and pretty plants would enhance. The inside of your house is very attractive: clean & modern. You could hire an architect who could offer suggestions about updating /personalizing the outside of your house. A consult is not cheap, but may be worth it. Good luck!
