How do I build a rock or masonry base for my front porch wood posts?

Decorative, to go around the post and up about 18 inches

You would need to wrap the post with cement board to the height you want. Use a latex modified cement to stick the stone to the cement board. Then use the modified cement as grout. You can use a gallon plastic food storage bag with a corner cut off to apply the grout in the joints. Fill the bag with the cement and squeeze it into the joints. Use a stick to force and smooth the grout. It will look great!
