Need to start on the roof and work your way down. Cannot just remove from A room, will come crashing down. Call a contractor, esp since you will have to patch out the roof.

I'd use a contractor as well AND get a binder with my name from his insurance co and perhaps get a performance bond (at my expense) in the event something goes wrong.

You remove it brick by brick - starting at the top and working down into the house. It will require a patch on the roof and any floors it is removed from. Some chimneys provide support for flooring - make sure to check it out.

I have seen homes that once had a brick chimney and for what ever reasons they were removed and to me those homes lost a lot of charm. So if you must remove it yourself be very careful but if it can be saved even if it's only cosmetic I would save it. Good luck to you.

Where the Chimney was will be a huge hole to the outside.Be prepared to temporary close it up.
