Should I glass in my balcony to protect it from the elements?

Would like to glass and screen in balcony 18 x9ft high but don't want to have to turn it into 4 season. Glassing it in would cut down on wind, rain, sun is terrible as I have 2 umbrellas up all the time but is it worth it?

  • The only way to find out is to get bids from licensed contractors and see if it falls within your budget. Here is how to hire any contractor you will ever need.

I think you have a good idea and it could look like a resort if executed properly.

That's up to you. I like 4 season rooms. Have you thought about a retractable awning?

Understand, but you don't need an architect, any quality contactor could do that. Very simple job. Why do you need fire sprinklers on your porch? Never heard if that. Plus the room could have Windows that open for exit or for a nice day

Glass walls would make it hotter on the balcony.

If the sun is very uncomfortable, I would suggest that you look into insulating window coverings that can be mounted on the inside.

Is your balcony part of a condominium, or is it in a high-rise building?

    Do you own the unit?

Ah, it now makes sense what the issue was regarding fire sprinklers. Yes, installing them in a condo balcony, or anywhere in the unit after construction is complete, is a big expensive job. To forget the glass, and to go with another option, is a wise decision.
