How do I makeover a flower bed?

I have several beds that once had mulch bark in some and decorative rock in others. I hate both. Any long lasting and inexpensive ideas?

Pine straw will go over both easily. Breaks down and replace every couple years. You can blow out the old n add new. If you want nothing growing through you have to remove the old mulch n rocks n lay new barrier. I use roofing plastic, nothing gets thru it. Lowes sells it, a huge roll is $26 or so. Mulch breaks down n becomes soil so I'm not sure why it's so popular Put an ad on Craigslist if you don't want your rocks, people will come get and you use those few dollars toward the things you need now.

I use clean wheat straw in mine. A 4-5” layer does the trick. My neighbor uses wood chips that he gets from the tree trimming guys. It doesn’t seem to get loose in the yard as easily as my straw. I’m not sure what kind of chemicals are on tree guy wood chips though.

    I hope that helps
