It’s a layering of materials but first get the grass out of your patio space. Then put edging of some sort in place. You will need gravel as the first layer it help with drainage, next is sand rake it smooth across the gravel. Then lay out the pavers keeping them evenly spaced. Once you have the pavers to your liking, sharp sand not play sand, is used between the pavers. Sounds easy...but pavers can get heavy after a while.

I laid a patio, but had never done it before. The area was mostly dirt, with some grass patches. I first dug out a rectangle area, down the depth of the square pavers I got at Home Depot. And, cleaned out all the dirt within the rectangle (for my patio space). I then put down some sand and tamped it down (I bought the tamper at Home Depot also). I made sure it was level before laying my square pavers. After I grouted it with sand. I surrounded the patio with rubber mulch, in both red and black/brown. The rubber mulch is very comfortable on bare feet, almost like walking on the foam that's under carpet. This patio cost me about $110.
