The best thing for you to do is talk with a LOCAL nursery (rather than a big box store) and ask them... they will have the best ideas and choices for YOUR area
Do you mean your deck faces south or you live in the south? What zone are you in? Flowers in pots on the ground?

Geraniums, daisies, verbena
Any flowers that love full sun will do well if they get enough water. Full sun on a deck tends to make the flowers dry out more quickly than in the ground. Petunias, moss roses, succulents, mini rose bushes, geraniums all do well in full sun. Check the flowers in the nursery, even if you do not intend to buy from them, to see the names of flowers that like full sun. Just read the description for care on them to locate the right ones and choose from that.
In Maine I use herbs, geraniums, cyclamens, in the ground we have Asian lilies, I think it probably depends on the part of the country you are in. I doubt the southern exposure is the same here as in the Carolinas,
