I would like to create an opening in my garage for a walk up bar.

I have a grape vine growing on the side of my garage and a little garden there. I'd like to cut a window sized opening with a fold down shelf so party guests can go to get a drink (with the supplies inside the garage) and the grape vine shading the area. Not sure about cutting into the garage. Has anyone tried this?

Sorry I wouldnā€™t it may effect your home insurance.

  • I can tell you the project probably starts with a sawsall...but if you're not sure what to do, you should consult a contractor.

If your garage wall is framed instead of a block wall, you must add a header over the window when you create it. Make sure you are creating a standard size, so you don't end up having to order a custom sized window. If the wall is block you should consult with a mason. Also, if you can enter your house from the garage, you should increase the security at that entrance.

  • Yes you can. Lots of garages have windows or doors. If you do not have the tools or knowledge, hire a contractor or licensed handy person. V. Smith provided some good suggestions. I think it is a wonderful idea and can look really cute when completed! My vote is to go for it. šŸ˜

Thank you all for your suggestions. It's a detached garage and already has a window in an inconvenient spot so this is adding another. Will contact a handyman.
