Some sort of divider would be nice and offer him some privacy. It could be a room divider or just a curtain on a track mounted on the ceiling. That way he could open and close it when needed.

Depending on the height of the ceiling in your garage... a loft sleeping space with love seat or chairs below.. BUT be aware that you would NOT be able to park a car in the garage due to the exhaust... the new living space would not be sealed tight enough to keep out fumes..

If your son will sleep in the garage, don’t park the car in there, too. There are laws about that, for several safety reasons. If the other side of the garage is for storage (but not for lawnmowers, gasoline, or poisons), you can use blue plastic tarps to give him room and privacy. The garage may need insulation, as well as an electric heater/fan/ac. A microwave, toaster oven, fridge and coffee pot with an automatic turnoff should meet most of his cooking needs. He will definitely need bathroom/shower access. You can set up a clothes rack, dresser or chest of drawers, and a laundry hamper. He’ll need a trash can and bags, an area rug, dim and bright light, a small eating table, a tv and a single bed and bedding. You can get a camping toilet, but that can cause problems. If there isn’t a sink, add another table with a pitcher and bowl, and a mirror above. Make sure any power strips and other electrical equipment are grounded, and don’t use household extension cords. He needs a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher, and maybe internet/WiFi access. I hope you are all safe and happy with this solution. ☺️

Perhaps give thought to a small older travel trailer that doesn't have slide-outs. They come in different heights so look for one that would be tall enough for him to stand in & yet short enough to fit inside garage. One brand in particular comes to mind is a Scottie. A pick-up truck camper maybe as it could set on the floor & not worry about wheels. Another along the camper line would be a pop-up tent camper as they aren't too tall & the wheels could be removed to lessen height before it is expanded open. These units would come with everything he would need to be comfortable, & some even have bathrooms & with baths comes holding tanks that can be emptied into portable disposal tanks via your sewer clean-out.

Older units I've described often offer unlimited DIY project updates & yet meet temporary housing needs. I hope these suggestions might be of help.
