Need a thrifty roof for backyard open deck, plus side privacy panels.

When we renovated, we added a back deck. It's great! It's huge! It's wide open! NOW we realize that we need a roof of sorts. But the money is super tight. We need something thrifty, to keep the sun out, in addition to privacy panels on the sides. Neighbors are very close. I would love to close it in some day, with an actual roof and screens all around. But right now, I just need ideas/suggestions for how to put a "roof" up. I'm thinking curtains or roll up blinds for the sides....which would be easily enough handled. Ideas, please? I'm thinking like under $100 ideas. Thanks!

Shades would work. You could use trellis panels for the roof if the structure is there or sail cloth and bolts.

Fabric shower curtain for privacy panel; they can be strung onto PVC pipe (easy to cut to length at home or have the store do it). There is also sunblock cloth available for "roofing". You could build a 10x12 frame with PVC (dry fit, don't glue) for about $50 and then put up the roof and sides.

Have you tried or thought about a sun shade? I just purchased a 14' X 20' one for about $65.00! All you need is four 4 x 4 poles to attach it...or to your house on one side and poles on the other. Can't wait to get mine up! They are weather proof also.

Check out Pinterest.com for ideas. I was looking as well and found inexpensive PVC piping for around the deck .So easy to i stall. You can set this in concrete too The home improvement store will even cut it for your dimensions. you can then add outdoor grommeted curtains or a trellis like privacy fence panels to the base.
