Pretty-ing up my decks

well, it's been a few years since waterproofing/staining my decks; and see that the sun has done it's thing on them. so...what's the best way to stabilize it without going into a big restoration; just want to keep it from getting worse. a couple of boards are a little loose, etc. even though it was stained, there really is no color, it's natural. plus not as young as i used to be so would really like to try something simple to begin with unless that would be a waste. thanks so much

how many years? if you are waterproofing, then you should be doing this every 2 years. if the deck is changing shades and starts to look "dirty" the I would suggest a good power washing and then waterproof it. of course any rotten boards need to be replaced before you go into any washing, but the above is mostly labor and not so much cost.

Hi Vividly, I'm Cindy. You could always unscrew the deck screws, flip the board over, and screw it back down. I agree that a good pressure washing would really help. Then re-stain the deck. Or paint the deck. Best wishes.

first, fix loose boards, then so as not to bend over use a sturdy bristle broom n some murphys wood soap n scrub it, rinse thoroughly, let dry, maybe even use a soft bristle broom to apply stain/water sealant!!

thank you very much -- never would have thought of a soft bristle broom - my back feels better already. when i did waterproof it, i was on my hands and knees. can't really do that as well anymore.

Hi Vividly, we have two large decks and a boat dock that regularly need to inspection and replace boards as the need occurs. Splitting warping and excessive damage can warrant that removal of the bad board with replacement of a new one. Safty us important.

Sealing the deck can help add the protection to make the boards last. The clearer stains only last 2-3 years. Consider re sealing your entire deck boards

surface after replacement and deck cleaning Is completed.

Meticulous preparation efforts are important to a sucessfully deck finish. Proper prep to include cleaning and application as product directs ( application thickness rate , weather conditions time of day/ temperature) will help ensure a professional and lasting job.

In my experience-I find the Sikkens to be the best for wood toned seals and have also had great sucess with Behr transparent and modest result with solid stains. It’s obvious in our situation-sun abused waterfront exposure that the more transparent and semitransparent finishes wear and last the longest and look the best.

I cant emphasize the proper prep and cleaning enough. Behr and Valspar have excellent customer support if any question or problems, and Behr has provided replacement product when a product failure ( the solid stain) has occurred their satisfaction guarentee is impressive. I hope this helps.
