How about using pallets? You can cover like skirting, and even give it a good paint job!
How about hanging fabric (or curtains or shower curtains or sheets) with tacks temporarily in a color that will complement the party?
Lattice would also do the trick and be easily installed .
Potted plants? If nighttime party, Xmas lights. Daytime party, banners or fringy stuff from party store. String wire at top of opening, hang strips of cloth with clothes pins. Or hang poster board from the wire.
Maureen, I had the same problem with our lakehouse. The existing lattice work was disgusting and I couldn't clean it to save my life. So here's what I did! I have to say, it was a stroke of genius!! I used styrofoam 4'x8' sheets. It really was fun to do. It looks like stone. In order not to post the entire project here, here's a link to the blog page.

I'm so glad you liked it, Maureen. People swear that it's stone, but nope! I put various holes in it to allow the wind to go through it. It really was simple.
