So often homeowners focus on the front and backyard landscaping. But why not the side yard? There are so many things you can do with your side yard. Today I'm showing you how you can easily add a path and butterfly garden so you can start utilizing a space that is often neglected. After this weekend makeover, you'll find yourself enjoying more of your side yard. Here's where we started on day one.
First you'll want to determine how far out you want your new path and flower garden. From there, remove all the weeds, grass, and anything else until you have bare soil. Divide the length of your area in half and place edging to define the two spaces.
The side closest to the house, place your stepping stones down the middle. Make sure they're level and then add the gravel around the stepping stones and throughout the rest of the area closest to the house. This completes your walking path.
Now for the butterfly garden! Space out your plants while they're still in the pots to make sure they are evenly placed. We used blue my mind along the front of the flower bed and bulbine along the back. Both of these plants attract butterflies and are perennials which means they'll come back every year.
Once you have all the plants where you want them, it's time to plant! Once you have them all planted, add another piece of edging along the front of the flower bed. This will help keep the grass out and the mulch in.
Last thing you'll do is add mulch all around the flowers and make sure it's about 3 inches thick. This will help keep the weeds away! And that's it. With just a few materials and giving yourself a weekend to complete, you'll have a new walking path to your hose and a butterfly garden to enjoy.
