Outdoor project time!
As soon as it gets warm & sunny its hard to keep us inside, we are done hibernating y’all.
The first projects we like to tackle are the maintenance ones, getting our home & property back to looking it’s best!
So we decided to tackle the chicken coop steps first.
Normally any kind of concrete repair would scare me but ever since we tackled fixing the large crack on my mom’s porch using CTS Cement’s Rapid Set Cement All, I am feeling more confident!
These stairs have some small cracks but mainly they are just worn, spalled, & old…
Lucky for me CTS Cement has a product to fix that too & I can’t wait to share it with y’all!
How To Resurface & Paint Concrete The Easy Way
Supplies:
- NEWCRETE Concrete Resurfacer (available at Home Depot)
- Trowel
- Bucket
- Cement Paint (optional)
- Painters Tape (optional)
Prepping The Surface
Before we get to the good stuff we need to prep the steps.
I used water mixed with degreaser & a scrub brush to thoroughly wash the surface & remove all the grime that had built up on the steps.
We also made sure the ground was level underneath the steps, I am clumsy enough without any added interferences!
Now we can move onto the fun part!
Mixing The NEWCRETE
My favorite thing about CTS Products is that they are so easy to use & mix, no special laboratory required 😉
Add about 2 1/2 quarts of water to a clean bucket, then mix in the 25 pounds of NEWCRETE.
Mix the entire time you are adding the material to the bucket.
Once all the material is added, continue to mix for about 2-3 minutes, until the consistency is uniform & lump free.
Applying The Mixture
Once mixed the NEWCRETE has a 30 minute working time.
First, we will use it to fill the small cracks, holes, & spalls before resurfacing the concrete.
Once everything was filled, I used the trowel to smooth the mixture onto the steps.
After 2 hours the steps were walkable (or one footed jump kickable 😉), talk about a 1 day project.
Painting The Steps
The concrete steps look amazing now that they are resurfaced, but we aren’t done yet!
I wanted to do something fun for the coop entrance, a painted on welcome mat.
First, I primed the steps with an exterior paint primer.
Next, I started painting the steps with black cement paint, this will be my base color.
For painting concrete, I like to use a synthetic roller that has texture. It speeds things up.
Once the base was dry, I taped off four lines to create a border.
I simply used the base of a level to make sure my spacing was even & straight on all four sides.
Then, I painted the taped off spaces with white cement paint.
Y’all how sweet are these newly resurfaced steps!
They look brand new, not like the old pitted & cracked steps they once were.
The best part is NEWCRETE provides a durable surface for outdoor & indoor use, so who knows where my next concrete project might lead 😉

Thank you for sharing! I normally run from anything involving concrete but since we chiseled up the tiles on the concrete pool deck--SOMETHING has to be done and I have searched for a DIY solution that we can actually do ourselves. Not sure if this is the answer but I will be looking into it and other products to see what might help us. Your coop is charming!!
