A friend got a chair similar to this at a garage sale. She wants

to paint it either dark green or a yellow green since it will go better with her other outdoor things. I told her I'd help since she's never painted anything but a wall. She says it's shiny (it's wood), so can we use a spray gray primer to cover it and then paint it with a gloss outdoor paint? If we have to sand the whole thing, that'll be a chore. Or can we uses liquid sander? Will spray gray primer stick to the glossy paint currently on it? And if the primer WILL stick, can we use spray paint for the green? That would be easier than a brush.

Yes this is what I use and spray a light coat wait until it drys and spray again to get an even coverage and there is a plastic gun that goes on top of the can that helps even flow if there is wind and coverage and it helps all that pressure on your finger and paint getting not on it😎 Don't use flat or glossy satin is better

Lightly sand, clean and use Rustoleum 2X spray paint using two light applications allowing to dry in-between then seal it with a UV protectant

I would wash the chair carefully, let it dry and paint it (one coat) preferably with gloss oil paint. There really isn't much point in doing a lot of steps as if it is left outside it would need touching up in a year or two anyway. Spray paint is fine for small projects but too easy to lose control with a chair like this. . . I guess unless you are a professional using the spray things like on HGTV.

Its called an Adirondack chair. I would use an exterior paint in a satin or semi-gloss paint. I would lightly go over the current finish with sandpaper, then a tack cloth to remove dust, then paint.

Buy paint with the primer in it like Valspar or Behr. She could also wipe it down with Liquid Sandpaper.

I agree with Janet Pizaro! Just lightly sand to remove any gloss. Prime then paint. Spray paint would be best to get better coverage. Several light coats will get you a better finish.

I am the Queen of deglosser/liquid sandpaper, I always use it when I can instead of sanding. In this case however, since people will be sitting on it, and using the arm rests, I would take an electric palm sander and quickly sand it. It will only take a few minutes, no more time than the deglosser really...Don't worry so much about in between the boards. Wipe off all the residue with a dampened towel, let dry and prime. It will look great with the pop of colour! You could push the chair back to spray the back boards horizontally if you have problems with drips. Slow and steady wins the race.

if its really glossy lightly sand to remove the shine. Make sure to clean ALL the sanding residue off before you paint. I would purchase 2 of the rustoleum "universal " paint and primer spray paints. Tons of colors and textures!

Shake well and do light coats starting underneath first. before and after pictures too. Good luck!
