Here are some links on how to do this, and also a link if you want to fill in the grooves to make it look like a standard wall:

I've painted over paneling and it isn't that difficult. First, clean and dust it. If you want to fill the grooves in the panels, use spackle and sponge or sand it smooth. Also patch any holes or damage. When everything is smooth, prime the whole thing. I prefer Kilz. It can be tinted to the color you want. That will help you get the look you want. For my daughter's apartment (the landlord gave us permission) we did a gorgeous green. For my closet, which I posted here, I did a soft ivory. With a good prep, the paint will adhere well and look great.

Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123 or BIN. Then paint like painting regular walls. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.

Paneling can be painted over! We bought a house that was ALL paneling. Our work was cut out for us, but it was not that hard to fix. First we calked all the cracks between the panels. Then we painted it with aroma free Kilz primer paint. After that we painted any color we wanted in that room and even put a wallpaper border along the top. It looked really nice. Hope this helps. We were new at all this but it looked beautiful when we got done.

You definitely CAN paint paneling. I used KILZ to prime the paneling. I didn't fill in the 'cracks' in the paneling. I was too impatient to get everything painted. After the primer dried, I painted my chosen color over the paneling. It turned out great! I was very pleased at how the project turned out. Painting paneling really isn't that much different than painting a regular wall. I would do it again! Good luck!

    Hello,

OK...very easy and quick, CHALK PAINT,”Annie Sloan”, no priming or sanding.Paint on a clean wall, if you do not want the grooves, claulk, but if cottage paneling is a look you like go for it. It Ia amazing, dries quickly covers usually in 2 coats, then you just Paint with the Sealer or apply the Wax...clear light, dark. One small tester can paint a coffee table or end table...try a small piece if you have a hesitation. I did my whole bathroom with Silver Chalk Paint, then I used a sealer by Annie to finish. Some people are hesitant because they think the paint is expensive, but one you save time, priming and or sanding. Plus it is healthy to use, non toxic. Also soooo many colors to choose from. The paint goes along way similar to nail polish. Look up YOUTUBE videos, plus Annie Sloan.

    Enjoy,

    Darciep

Clean and rinse the paneling well to remove cooking oils and any other debris and oils that would prevent the paint from adhering. Then paint with a product called Gripper made by Glidden. Now you are ready to paint. We always used a brush to paint the seams and then we go back and, with a roller, paint the remainder.

Wash, sand, and then prime with Original Killz and you won't regret it. Good Luck!
