Do I have to do anything to a new mailbox before stenciling it?

Wash it to get any grease, oil or wax that may be on it. It is important to get good adhesion of the stencil. The stencil area can be very lightly sanded with fine sandpaper or wiped with a de-glosser. Remember to keep the sandpaper or de-glosser in the stencil area only as it will dull the surface. As with any painting it's all about t he prep. Have fun with your project.

I would use a green Scotch Bright pad just to light scuff the surface.

I would start by thoroughly cleaning it and maybe using a de-glosser . Then I would go for it. I think it would help to put a coat or two of poly to protect your stencil design.

I would try a tiny bit of the stencil paint on the bottom (before removing the gloss) and see if it adheres first (scratch test).
