I've seen painted stone but I never saw one that looked good. Try enhancing the stonework with shrubbery.
Rent a hi pressure water pump at Lowe's. so a soft hit will tell you because the non real sounds empty
If it is real stone, it can be painted, but it may not look like natural stone anymore after you are done. Natural stone has many color variations, and once you paint it, those will be gone. Test a small area to see if you will like it before going forward with the project.
If it is real- DO NOT PAINT. You will ruin the value of having it stone.
