Sand, clean (I would use tsp), then paint with RustOleum spray paint.

TSP is the name of the cleaner. I get it at Lowe’s. It was originally developed as a deck cleaner but it’s great for pre paint clean up. You can also use denatured alcohol.

If you can, remove any glass, clean all grime off of lantern, then use a spray primer and paint formulated for metal. Start the spray a few inches away from the metal..it tends to prevent runs and drips, and end the spray off the piece. Let dry. You might need to do a few light coats ....that’s ok. It’s better than runny paint.

Rustoleum 2X spray paint for metal.

Hi Arlene. I'm Cindy. Rustoleum makes a spray paint made especially for metal, and they have a lot of colors to choose from. A cardboard box makes an excellent spray booth. Tape off any parts you don't want paint on. A couple light coats should do the job for you. Good luck with this project.

TSP is a really good cleaner to get off grease and grime before you paint. Use Rustoleum or another paint made for metal. Spray in thin coats to avoid drips. You should probably sand the metal lightly to give something for the paint to stick to.

Thank you for clarifying tsp. I was not familiar with it. All the suggestions are helpful.

I have never used TSP myself, but it is recommended so many times before painting things to clean it, esp. things like kitchen cupboards, that I have gleaned a lot of confidence in the product for cleaning things really well. I am glad you like the suggestions that we have given to you. I hope they help you paint your lanterns!
