How do you seal a clay pot before painting so it doesn't crumble?

I want to decorate clay pots for my outdoor patio but have had then crumble in the past. Clay pots are very cost effective and trendy when painted.

I've never sealed mine, but I do either empty, allow to dry out, and store away from rain & snow several weeks before hard freeze, or I bring indoors. Moisture trapped in the clay expands when it freezes, breaking down the clay. Add multiple freezes and thawing, and rain/snow to add moisture thru winter and your pot won't hold up long. I' kept my pots for a decade or longer this way.
