I've never sealed mine, but I do either empty, allow to dry out, and store away from rain & snow several weeks before hard freeze, or I bring indoors. Moisture trapped in the clay expands when it freezes, breaking down the clay. Add multiple freezes and thawing, and rain/snow to add moisture thru winter and your pot won't hold up long. I' kept my pots for a decade or longer this way.
