How would I white wash an old wood gate.

Should I sand the gate before I paint? I would like the old gate look for the finished project.

Thank you,
Debbie

Use the dry brush method - putting a little paint on the brush and going over the entire surface and sand the rest off. This is very dry looking wood and the paint will absorb quickly.

Just cut your acrylic latex paint by half with water (50/50), it should be really runny (and messy) so use drop cloth! Brush on first layer and let soak in and dry, it looks like this wood is really dry and will suck the whitewash right in. If you want a more rustic look you can sand some high point lightly. I wouldn’t sand to start the whitewash looks better with some texture. Whatever method you choose post some pics so we can see how it come out! Btw you can build the coverage as much as you want, I like the real light washed out look, but some prefer a heavier paint look.

i would do the 50/50 water and paint mixture. i did this to a bird house roof that was black so the birds wouldn't fry. i live in georgia and the paint has stayed out in the weather for 3 years. it still looks fine and it's in full sun all day. i just kinda winged it and it turned out fine. good luck.
