I saw your door painting project on DIY. The last time I painted my metal front door, I painted the edges but after it dried and I closed the door some of the paint came off. How do I avoid that happening this time?

The door needs to be dry before closing. I put a plastic tape of shed fastened to the wall behind the open door until it is dry to prevent lost of AC or heat. I have also put a light oil on the edge of the door to prevent transfer of paint from the door.

The best metal paint I've used is rustoleum. The trick is thin- even coats and complete dry time. On the edges sanding may also be necessary between coats.

Rustoleum makes an excellent product for your purpose. Sand the door, prime it, and then paint a thin layer of paint and let it dry. Lightly sand again and apply another coat of paint, let dry.

A clear coat of Rustoleum when all is done, again, be sure to let dry completely.
