Cover surrounding areas with scrap cardboard or a black plastic bin liner before you spray and then shake the can well. Because the can is designed to spray at any angle, getting into tights spots is easy. After spraying one side, move your cardboard or plastic to the other side before spraying. That way you can cover bars and railings easily and quickly.
I would used a paint brush and gloss paint to make it last longer. Spray will also work, but very messy.
Hi Diane, both spray paint and a roller brush will work. Spray painting will be quicker but you'll waste a lot of paint and you'll need to take the door down first to avoid spray everything around it.
Personally, I would take it off the hinges and spray paint it. Rolling/brushing all of those bars will be time-consuming.
Hello. I think the best way to approach painting any door is to remove it from its hinges place it on saw horses and paint it with canned paint or spray paint.
The most controlled and readily visible application might be achieved this way.
I would spray paint it.

How to paint rusty metal window security bars and gate?
If there is a screen, remove that first. Then I would remove the door and spray paint it.

It would take a long time to paint with a brush because you would have to go around the entire piece of each bar. Here are some ideas

A "sponge" type brush is an easy way to paint the rod iron if you prefer not to remove it from where it is attached.
Hi Diane, I would take it off and spray paint it with a rustoleum type paint, you can get it done easier and with a lot less effort :)
Hi! I would clean it thoroughly, sand any rough spots and spray paint it with Rustoleum paint. Stay safe!
Hello there Diane,
Colour it to match your decoration or colour it to make it stand out as a feature, the choice is yours. Enjoy!

Spraying will give you a better finish but may be difficult to paint if you don't take it down. They are normally very heavy so could be difficult to remove. You could try covering the area with plastic for overspray but rolling or brushing might be easier.
