what kind of wood is it?
Wood type is important as Ms Janet asked. Treated wood, I’d use something like Thompson’s deck sealer. If it’s Ipe or one of the exotics, I’d use pure tung oil with no additives. Either way watch the moisture of the wood as it needs to dry out some before sealing.
