    If it is behind a wood stove, I wouldn't suggest painting it, as you may inadvertently create a fire hazard. If it is only the grout/mortar lines you would like to change, you can chip/grind them out about 1/2 inch deep and re-point the brick.

    I tend to agree not due to a fire hazard but because it will look painted not authentic. I would wire brush it clean, maybe use a muratic acid wash, then maybe seal it or let it go.

    I would have to ask if your talking real brick and mortar, only because mine is a faux panel that I just put up with because of the heat from the wood stove. Painting in either case may cause it to peel at some time. I would just clean it. Check at the hardware store for a cleaner that might work.

    I painted mine with regular wall paint but in a gloss so it would be easy to get the wood dust off.
