Any paint will do, but if you will hang it outdoor, use outdoor paint.

Buy sample size mini-cans of outdoor paint at your local WalMart, Home Depot, etc.

I'm having the same thoughts. Depending on what you use, make sure you prep the wood first by sanding it.

If it's outside, outdoor paint. I suggest this...get some paint samples and let your kid do it. Or you can stain it w outdoor stain.

If it is for the birds, leave natural to weather. Mother birds are picky, if it has a turpenpine odor or strong smell, they will not nest. If for deco, paint and decorate with wood bird or animal cutouts, a good kid's project. Who knows maybe an upbeat mama bird will move in. Have fun!
