I needed a chair for my bedroom and couldn't find just the right one....so I decided to try my very first furniture refinish! I bought this poor, beat up chair on Craigslist for $15.00.
Here is the "before" picture. Pretty sad looking, but great bones.
I love carved wood and this chair was just the right size and feel I was going for, it just needed a major update.
I carefully removed the nailhead...one at a time.
I sanded and sanded...and sanded the wood. I used a dremel tool to get into the grooves of the wood carving.
I removed the padding that was on the chair, but saved it because it was in good shape. I replaced the cloth that was on the bottom of the seat because it was torn and not salvageable. I used a stain/polyurethane combination on the wood, lightly sanding between coats. I only did 2 coats and then a clear gloss polyurethane because I wanted a high gloss finish.
I folded up a thick layer of batting and putt it on the seat and then replaced the original padding. I wanted thicker padding it had when I bought it.
I found new nailhead online that came in a strip where you only had to nail in a nail about every 5 nailheads and not individual nails. It helped me keep it straight...individual nails would have taken forever and most likely would not have been straight, especially since this was my first furniture refinishing project. I nailed it just inside the rope trim.
I found this gold fabric that seemed fitting for the style of the chair and also went well in my bedroom. I stapled it in place, pulling it tight as I went along. I stapled new rope trim around the outside edges.
Here it is in my bedroom icon It's the perfect size, and look, I was going for.
I will say, this was a little ambitious for my first furniture refinish since it had wood carving and nailhead, but I was pleased with the way it turned out.
