DIY Chalkboard Coffee Table

This roadside find was perfect for a chalk board table. Short enough for the little ones to create on. 
FREE curbside find... SCORE!
First the whole table was wiped down and cleaned to remove dirt. No sanding was necessary.
I had purchased these moulds from IOD a few weeks ago and knew when I saw the plain Jane table it needed some fancy added. Easy peasy! I took my art brush and dusted the mould with corn starch, because that's all I could find. 
The I took the paper clay and pressed it into the mould. I used a spatula to smooth the surface so it was nice and flat. Quickly I removed it from the mould.
It was still wet when I applied it to the table with Elmer's glue. It attached nicely.
Then I painted the whole table (not waiting for the applique to even dry) using a stippling technique with my brush to create a rough textured surface.
Two bold colors were used for the base. I simply striped one color after the other not really caring to completely cover the first layer.
After the paint had dried, I used the Elmer's glue again to paint a light coat on selected dates of the table to give it a light crackle. The last layer of paint was applied not covering a 100% as I wanted the peekaboo effect of all the colors. A dark wax was applied to bring out all the yummy imperfections. ❤
2 coats of chalk board paint was applied to the top and allowed to cure for 3 days as recommended by the chalk board paint label.
A liquid chalk marker was used to trace around a border stencil to create this lovely permanent frame around the table top. After all, it was a piece of furniture even when not in use by the grand kids. Just wipe it clean and decorate as usual.
I can't believe this is the same table dumped by the road.
