I did a painted update to our basic nightstand to give it some personality and add some color to our dark room. I am super happy with the outcome.

Before and After of the Nightstand

You can see on the left how it looked before, and the right is the current state!

Supplies needed for the project

Fortunately, Michael’s had a stencil that matched my design and I purchased it! Link to the stencil:  https://www.michaels.com/diy-home-bone-inlay-laser-stencil-set-by-artminds/10478855.html.

Wipe down surface, no sanding necessary

I had to do this project indoors, so I put it on some trashbags to protect the floor.

Brush or roll on paint

I used a brush because I wanted it to look hand painted, but a roller would work as well for a smoother finish.

I did two coats of paint on all visible surfaces.

I pulled out the drawers and I used the chalk paint in Rust-o-leum’s Coast Blue, matte chalk paint. No primer needed.

Making the best of living in a small apartment

Just making fun of myself for having to paint in the living room.

Lay out your stencil

The directions say you can place with tape, but painters tape was pulling off my chalk paint so I just held it down. It wasn't perfect, but I was happy with the results.

A sponge is a lot better than a brush

You can see for the bigger areas a sponge is going to give you a lot better coverage.

First coat and recommended placement of stencil

Here's what it looked like with the recommended placement of the stencil

Feels a little boring?

This is once the basic stencil was completed.

Decided to freehand additional designs

You can see on the top I added more free hand details and on the bottom drawer that's only the stencil design.

All done adding the extra details for now

Here's a shot of all the details up close

Finished!

Here's the finished product!

Finished!

Here's the final product. I am planning to do some small touch ups, adding a top coat to seal it, and adding interesting knobs.

I agree with the lady above, Lori. I’d get some cool legs and paint them white. Lift that bad boy up and show it off. It’s awesome!

Question: WHERE did you get those COOL long wooden looking accent pieces above the nightstand? I’m like obsessing over them!!!
